WORKSHOPS

The UPFI Workshops for 2026 will provide a comprehensive educational program that nurtures both emerging and experienced filmmakers through a series of carefully curated activities. The framework consists of three primary components: Film Appreciation and Criticism, which involves active discussions, exchanges of ideas, and assignments to cultivate analytical thinking; Film Masterclasses, which offer exercises and activities that engage participants in the creative process; and Film Production Workshops, where participants will produce tangible output through experiential and hands-on learning. The workshops will run quarterly from January to December 2026, and participants are guided according to their work experiences, with priority given to beginners, followed by intermediate and advanced participants. The aim is to foster inclusivity and growth in Philippine cinema by adapting to diverse skill levels.

In this workshop, participants will explore how simple, real-life scenesโ€”captured through photosโ€”can be transformed into short documentary-style videos. Guided by the facilitator, participants will learn to observe their surroundings, identify meaningful moments, and translate them into visual stories. They will be introduced to the process of capturing images, selecting and organizing them, and shaping them into a coherent narrative through sequencing, motion, and sound. From framing and composition to editing and storytelling, participants will gain hands-on experience in turning still images into moving narratives. The workshop encourages both individual and collaborative work, allowing participants to experiment with different approaches to documentary-style storytelling using accessible tools. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have created a short video piece based on โ€œfound storiesโ€ drawn from their own observations and experiences. Key Workshop Highlights: Exploring everyday life as source material for visual storytelling Introduction to photography-based storytelling Sequencing images into narrative form Basic video editing and motion techniques Sound integration (music, voice, ambient sound) Individual and collaborative creative work ๐€๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐…๐š๐œ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐จ๐ซ Renan Saliva teaches photography at the University of the Philippines Film Institute, where he also earned distinction as a recipient of the Best Thesis Award during his student years.
